Psychological tips to quit Smoking

There are a few methods which we feel would work reasonably well to help someone quit smoking-

First one is, one has to choose a strong reason to quit smoking and let it be associated with something really big and important to you in your life, for example you can put a picture of your family and kids near the mirror and write next to it that they will be the happiest and the safest only if you could quit smoking


You can also use reverse punishment method which means whenever you smoke you can punish yourself by having to drink one glass of bitter gourd juice or doing 50 situps, strong association of pain while smoking can help your mind get away or avoid it while doing this.

we can also use the 5 second rule that ie, whenever you have a very strong urge to smoke, try to count 54321 in a reverse manner and give yourself a few seconds to stop yourself from the overwhelming desire to smoke, these are like some small psychological tricks which have worked well with many many of my patients, says Dr. Aishwarya More.

You can also put a healthy picture of you before you started to smoke so that whenever you look at it, you realise how glowing and better looking your skin, hair and nails you had before you started to smoke.

Majority of people Who attempted to quit smoking cold turkey are usually unable to contain the withdrawal symptoms therefore always consult your doctor in advance before cold turkey so that your doctor can throw light on the things which happen during withdrawal symptoms and what you can do when they become overwhelming.

Symptoms are like headaches, shivering, aggressiveness, loss of appetite, etc.

You have to throw away all the things related to smoking like your ashtrays, lighters and clean all the things related like your clothes, bedding, furniture, etc. let your home smell clean so that any remnants or the old smell of smoke Don’t drive the urge to start smoking again.

Avoid stressful work and engage yourself in activities which give you peace of mind and a happy feeling, a feeling of satisfaction, get involved into anything creative , read an inspiring book which increases your willpower , which increases your control over yourself , spend time with kids, learn a new subject or language, take some exercise regime , or a dance / aerobics class or anything which interests you.
